I am presenting my favourite subjects, which are flowers and local landscapes. I admire the curves of the hills above Portsmouth and Cornholme, with their changing colours through the seasons. In addition to those, an Irish and a Russian landscape will also feature.

The paintings are framed and are available to buy at affordable prices (£30-£40). Treat yourself or buy a special gift for a loved one.

Watercolour: Red Flowers

Red Flowers

I am proud of this painting. This is my first commission. A good person bought my “Delicate Steps” painting and a while later commissioned me this work for their friend. They wanted exactly the same thing, but with red flowers instead of yellow. I chose a different species of flowers and the composition is slightly different, especially the uneven division between dark green and lime parts of background, but it is the same idea of a cascade of small-to-medium flowers down two branches.

Watercolour: Alien Probes

What captivated me about these little purple flowers is their elegant, almost mechanical, symmetry. As I boosted the scale up considerably, tiny grass blades now look like long bamboo shoots, swishing across the whole visual field.

I wanted to express the lively interplay of the flowers and the grass, of the light and shadows.

Watercolour: A Wall in the Hills

A Wall in the Hills

I have always been fascinated by the art of dry stone walling – as much as by the fact that there are courses on it running continuously throughout Calderdale. Everyone wants to know how to dry stone wall. The best thing about our West Yorkshire moors is that around each corner (over each little hill) a new perspective is open to you, a new fresh view.

Watercolour: Gate to Magic

Gate to Magic

I was simply captivated by the light effect created by the landcape: with the hill slope across the road behind a dry stone wall being much brighter than the foreground, shaded by a grove of trees. Two trunk on both sides of the picture for me create a certain Japanese torii effect – quite appropriate for a magical place like Cornholme, which, I am sure is populated by various kami and fairies.

Watercolour: A Ray of Light

A Ray of Light

Living in a part of the world where seeing the sun is a rare occurrence, one learns to appreciate every single ray that breaks through the clouds – which is what happened in this case. I love clouds, don’t get me wrong. I am a proud member of the Cloud Appreciation Society. So, all in all, I am happy with this painting.

Watercolour: Our Narrow Valley

Our Narrow Valley

So, this is what you see if you climb either of the hills above Calder Valley – which runs parallel to Manchester-Leeds rail track. The hill tops (with the Stoodley Pike – a Monument to peace – in the distance), then the shelves  with farms and fields, and then it’s down to the valley where along one road our happy community lives and thrives (mostly creatively, in these times of crisis).

Watercolour: Glenn View Inn

Glenn View Inn

This is a painting of our local pub with a lovely family atmosphere and good food. I just love the hill behind it for the variety of textures and colours of trees growing there. My favourite bit was conveying the white of the walls.

Watercolour: Byzantine crowns

I just loved the variance of colour in these flowers from purple to blue, as well as incredibly elegant long leaves with a white partition. In the painting, I really wanted to capture the cup-like structure of the flowers.

Watercolour: Delicate Steps

Delicate steps

With this painting, I started developing my version of pointillism. I just really wanted to express the express the whole mess and the mesh of the background for these quite obvious on the one hand, but, on the other, quite expressive and exquisite florets.
