I am presenting my favourite subjects, which are flowers and local landscapes. I admire the curves of the hills above Portsmouth and Cornholme, with their changing colours through the seasons. In addition to those, an Irish and a Russian landscape will also feature.

The paintings are framed and are available to buy at affordable prices (£30-£40). Treat yourself or buy a special gift for a loved one.

I only used dry paper technique for this watercolour painting. However, I aimed to let the water flow especially in the more ephemeral  pale petals in the background.

With this painting, I am especially happy with how the bright big leaf and the dark shadows turned out.

Buy this watercolor for £50 from Kava Cafe, Rochdale Rd, Todmorden, until 1 December, or directly from me at poeticoxana@gmail.com

Watercolour: Fiery Petals

I love painting larger-than-life flowers.

First of all, I cherish the opportunity to study them in minute detail, admiring all the complexity of colours and textures that nature endowed them with.

Secondly, it gives me sensual pleasure to witness watercolours find their way across rough paper, mixing together and revealing the paper here, obscuring it there.

For “Fiery Petals” I used a combination of dry paper method for the grass and yellow petals and wet paper method for the red petals in order to make the latter stand out.

Watercolour: Red Flowers

Red Flowers

I am proud of this painting. This is my first commission. A good person bought my “Delicate Steps” painting and a while later commissioned me this work for their friend. They wanted exactly the same thing, but with red flowers instead of yellow. I chose a different species of flowers and the composition is slightly different, especially the uneven division between dark green and lime parts of background, but it is the same idea of a cascade of small-to-medium flowers down two branches.

Please note that lime lines in the middle of the painting are not defect, they are a copyright watermark stamp.

This painting is SOLD.

Exhibition at Todmorden Tourist Information Centre – all February 2013

I am excited to announce a new exhibition of my watercolours at Tormorden Tourist Information Centre. Yup, right here: across the road from the Town Hall. The exhibition runs throughout the month of February.

I am premiering three landscapes at this exhibition. The one you can see here is called “Spring Trees” and is inspired by the view from the hills down into Portsmouth valley. (Photographed next to “Horns of Summer“)

Another one is “Above Portsmouth”, seen here with the older watercolour “Study in Pink. Slow“.

'Mashes of Cornholme' landscape

And finally I painted this “Marshes of Cornholme” (here above “Melting Blast“) on wet paper, all colours flowing into each other and hopefully creating the sense of richness and fertile moist that you can find on the tops above Cornholme.

Why not drop by; the Centre is open every day 10 am – 4 pm, closed on  Sundays. Buy one of my very reasonably priced paintings (£20-£30) for your loved one to give on Valentine’s Day. The Centre also stocks a selection of souvenirs, books and DVDs about the local area and by local authors.

I personally am intrigued by how complementary colours (those that are directly opposite each other, such as red and green and red-purple and yellow-green) stand by each other. red and green are definitely my favourite pair.

Watercolour: Alien Probes

What captivated me about these little purple flowers is their elegant, almost mechanical, symmetry. As I boosted the scale up considerably, tiny grass blades now look like long bamboo shoots, swishing across the whole visual field.

I wanted to express the lively interplay of the flowers and the grass, of the light and shadows.

Watercolour: Byzantine crowns

I just loved the variance of colour in these flowers from purple to blue, as well as incredibly elegant long leaves with a white partition. In the painting, I really wanted to capture the cup-like structure of the flowers.
